OUR ORIGINS

The word ‘Cortijo‘ was used in Spain to refer to a rustic location with dwellings. However, in ancient Mexico, the word was used to describe the lower rank of a small ranch. The key difference is that in a ‘Cortijo’, the owner led by example, working side by side with the workers and sharing meals with them at the end of the day. Thus, they commemorated the camaraderie that bound them, because more than employees, they were friends.

Today, we honor the traditional Mexican ‘Cortijo’: We craft mezcal with deep reverence for the agave, the land, and time; but above all, we have profound respect for the tradition and legacy of our people, the mezcal masters.
